Synthetaic (now RAIC Labs) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the U.S. Army to provide a solution for near-real-time object detection, classification, and imagery annotation.
The new contract is the next step in Synthetaic’s efforts to adapt its Rapid Automatic Image Categorization (RAIC) platform for military applications. Synthetaic expects RAIC to fill a critical gap in the Department of Defense’s ongoing implementation of Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2). JADC2, the DoD’s concept for an AI-powered unified network of sensors across all branches of the armed forces, is an all-out modernization of communications and data-sharing within the military. Each military branch runs its own program in service of JADC2, including the Army’s Project Convergence.
RAIC stands alone in its capability of enabling any user to rapidly develop and validate AI models and deploy them against massive datasets without specialized training or pre-labeled data. As such, it’s uniquely positioned to empower analysts, targeteers, and other soldiers to deploy AI to edge-based intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance (ISR) platforms, as well as aid in real-time decision-making on the battlefield.
Synthetaic has already successfully completed Phase I and Phase II contracts with the Air Force’s AFWERX program, which similarly focused on rapid automatic target detection and automatic target recognition (or ATD/ATR). In an object detection demonstration under those contracts, RAIC significantly outperformed more traditional machine learning methods in both efficiency (by a 21:1 ratio) and accuracy (by 9.2 percentage points in F-score).
